Although this remedy
has not been extensively proven, it contains some valuable information. The
proving indicates that it is similar to diseased states in humans, particularly
in women, such as hysterical and thematic conditions. The patient always feels
chilly and is easily affected by cold. Cold and damp weather can aggravate the
rheumatic state, resulting in rheumatism not only in the muscles and joints
throughout the body but also along the course of nerves. The general nervous
disturbance is characterized by a lack of balance in the will or a great
disturbance in the voluntary system, which is the underlying feature of
hysteria. The symptoms are mixed with rheumatism, and soreness is felt
throughout the body. Other symptoms include trembling, numbness, jerking of
muscles, inability to exercise the will over the muscles of the body, and
turmoil in the voluntary system, leading to stiffness.
The patient has a
tendency to catch cold, which makes her sensitive in the glands and larger
organs such as the liver and uterus. Complaints in these organs arise due to
cold and damp weather (Dulcamara) or chilling. She is sensitive to cold in all
parts of her body except for her head, and being exposed to cold aggravates her
symptoms both locally and generally. Headaches, on the other hand, improve in
the open air and with cold, which is an exception to the general rule of
aggravation from cold.
There is a profound
psychological state that oscillates with physical symptoms. The person
experiences intense gloominess, feels overwhelmed with sorrow, and becomes
lethargic in deep sadness, similar to how Psorinum and Pulsatilla affect
people. This emotional state can appear suddenly or worsen due to movement,
fear, excitement, or exposure to cold. Typically, the person experiences
muscular soreness with a sensation of being bruised all over, along with
drawing and jerking sensations. These physical symptoms can suddenly disappear,
leaving the person feeling sad and hysterical, sitting quietly and refusing to
speak. When questioned, she may burst into tears or express her intense sadness
in different ways. The headache is often accompanied by profound sadness and
variable moods. The physical and mental symptoms constantly alternate and change.
The jerking movements have led doctors to recognize the similarity to chorea in
these hysterical-rheumatic conditions. Rheumatic symptoms can change into
chorea in a day, and choreic movements can continue with muscle soreness,
numbness, and jerking.
The symptoms of chorea
have certain distinct characteristics. Muscle jerking can occur due to
emotional states or being exposed to cold. If pressure is applied to any part
of the body, the muscles of that area will start jerking. These nervous,
rheumatic, and hysterical patients may not have constant chorea, but when they
try to sleep, the side they lay on starts jerking, making it difficult for them
to sleep. If they turn to their back, the muscles of their back and shoulders
will start jerking, and if they turn over to the other side, the muscles
pressed on will commence to jerk. The restlessness and nervousness caused by
these symptoms can drive patients to distraction. The patients' imagination is
full of all sorts of thoughts, and their bodies are full of unease because they
cannot find a comfortable place to rest. Sometimes the muscles are so sore that
the patient cannot lie on them for long periods. The symptoms may manifest as
numbness, soreness, or jerking, affecting not just one part, but the entire
body.
The patient is marked
by fear, restlessness, and anguish, and may display a mania similar to that of
nervous, hysterical women. This remedy is particularly relevant for women since
its symptoms are often associated with women's health issues. A significant
feature is the mental state following the disappearance of rheumatism.
Sometimes the rheumatism improves, but the mental state deteriorates. However,
relief can be achieved through diarrhea or the establishment of a flow from the
uterus. Failure to find relief can lead to a low form of mental excitement or
gloominess. One symptom that describes this sadness is a feeling as if a black
cloud has descended upon the patient, weighing like lead upon her head. The
text uses several terms such as "melancholy," "gloominess,"
and "low spirited," but the term "sadness" is
all-encompassing. Furthermore, patients may exhibit suspicion and fear of
death, refusing even to take medicine due to an inexplicable sense that
something is wrong with it. This remedy has been known to cure puerperal mania
caused by taking cold during or after childbirth.
The headaches
associated with this condition are rheumatic in nature. They are often
described as a sore, bruised feeling throughout the head, with a specific focus
on the occiput or the top of the head. Some people experience the sensation of
cold air blowing on their brain, but paradoxically, most headaches improve with
exposure to cold air. These headaches can be triggered by weather changes or
exposure to cold, damp conditions. There are many different types of headaches,
including pressing headaches that feel like a bolt extending down into the
neck. Many people also experience soreness and pain in the back of the neck. In
addition to the headaches, people with this condition often experience sore and
painful eyeballs that are sensitive to movement.
The remedy Actea
causes soreness in the abdomen, which feels bruised. It also causes an
alternation of diarrhea and constipation. In women, Actea can be particularly
useful for addressing issues related to the female genitalia. However, it is
not correct to say that Actea makes confinement easy as this encourages routine
practice. The homoeopathic physician does not prescribe a remedy unless the
symptoms of the general condition are found in that remedy. Actea is helpful
for prolapsus of the uterus as it relaxes the parts and relieves bearing down
sensations. Remedies can cure prolapsus if the symptoms match. Therefore,
prescribing for the woman as a whole, rather than just one symptom, is
essential. Fifty different remedies could have the same symptom, so prescribing
the appropriate remedy based on the general condition is crucial.
In individuals with
hysterical rheumatic constitutions, there are often menstrual disorders. The menstrual
flow may be irregular, copious, suppressed, or scanty, accompanied by severe
pain throughout. It is peculiar that with this remedy, pain occurs during the
flow, while generally, the flow relieves pain. The most severe mental,
rheumatic, jerking, and cramping symptoms occur during the menstrual flow.
Epileptic spasms may occur during menses, and there are all sorts of
nerve-related suffering. Soreness along the course of nerves, muscles or joints
may also occur during the flow, along with an increase in mental symptoms. Cold
and chilliness are common, requiring the patient to be wrapped up.
"Rheumatism. Dysmenorrhea." "Soreness in the uterus and ovarian
region. Lame, bruised feeling all over; painful menstruation," and some
have referred to it as rheumatic dysmenorrhea, which is not an inaccurate term.
During pregnancy, this
remedy can cure a variety of conditions that are common in women with nervous,
rheumatic, and restless constitutions. These women experience symptoms that
alternate with one another, making alternation a defining aspect of their case.
For example, a woman may have had a history of a hysterical constitution for
many years, but during pregnancy, she may experience nausea all the time. As
one set of symptoms becomes severe, others may temporarily subside, and they
change around, similar to Pulsatilla. To accurately prescribe for these
troublesome cases, the symptoms must be taken collectively to get a complete
image of the patient. It's not uncommon for a woman to present with one group
of symptoms one day and an entirely different set in a couple of weeks.
Hysterical patients are challenging to manage because of the constantly
changing symptoms and their tendency to deceive the doctor.
During the first stage of labor, shivering and hysterical manifestations can occur. If labor pains are irregular or have stopped, it is difficult for dilatation to take place. However, when regular and prolonged pains come on, they can suddenly stop and cause pain to radiate to the hip. This medicine can help regulate the pains and ensure they continue until the end. Women during confinement can be easily affected by emotions, and any excitable event or emotional story can cause the pains to stop. If this happens after labor, the lochia can stop, cramps and after-pains can occur, and the milk can be suppressed. This remedy can be compared to Caulophyllum, which has symptoms such as weakness in the reproductive system of women, labor-like pains during menstruation, and rheumatic stiffness of the back.
It's not uncommon for
individuals with an emotional disposition to experience physical symptoms such
as a fluttering, quick pulse, and irregular heartbeat, although many hysterical
symptoms can occur without any associated heart disturbances. One example of such
a symptom is the feeling of soreness or enlargement in the heart region. Other
symptoms may include soreness in the back of the head and neck, which can cause
the head to draw back due to muscle contraction, as well as violent aching and
rheumatism in the back. The muscle contractions can make it impossible to lie
on the back or side of the body. Additionally, numbness and trembling may be
present, along with a general sense of soreness.
The symptoms related
to the nerves are simply a repetition of what has been previously mentioned.
They include hysterical spasms, convulsions, and trembling of the legs, which
may cause difficulty in walking. The numbness experienced can resemble the
feeling of paralysis, accompanied by a paralytic weakness. The most beneficial
results have been observed using the 30th, 200th, 1000th, and higher potencies
of the medicine and through the administration of single doses. Some of its
conditions are similar to Blue Cohosh, and it can be compared to other remedies
such as Pulsatilla, Sepia, Natrum mur, Lit. 1., Caulophyllum, and Igasia.
